Ireni Stamou was born in Greece where traditional music and dances were an important and integral part of her dance experience.

At the age of nine, Ireni studied ballet in The Grands Ballet Canadian , as well as jazz and modern at the Bejart based school Pointepienu in Montreal, where her family moved. She graduated with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Contemporary dance from Concordia University , Montreal and was awarded the prize for most outstanding choreography in 1987.

From her first performances and choreographies Ireni was critically acclaimed and received artists grants from The Canada Council of the Arts and The Quebec Council of arts and letters . She was also guest dance for the international company Marie Chouinard . She performed her own choreographies internationally in major festivals and events starting at Le Pradillo in Spain 1991. In 1993 she was selected to represent Canada in the Montreal competition for the 1st young choreographers Banc d'essai International (Tangente dance production house) with her choreography La couleur de ma langue , and, toured France, Germany, Belgium, Hungary and the Czech republic.

Ireni received study grants from the Quebec arts and letters to study traditional dances with the Dora Stratou troupe in Athens, Greece 1996, solo choreography with Suzanne Linke in Austria 1996 and Somatic Dynamic Anatomy with the Topf school in New York 1997, 1998.

Ireni was invited to return to Europe with residency offers, teaching and performances with her solo choreography Corpus Delirium namely at the Opera house of Lille France , and the Dance in Movement Festival , Slovakia 1997. In 1998 Ireni received a significant international co production to create choreography with composer Walter Hus with whom she created her European premier Fugitive Epiphanies in Kortright Belgium. She presented her trio Come now colossal and uprooted at the Danspace Project in New York . In Canada Ireni´s work was selected for the International Festival of New Dance in 1997 and 1999, The Canada Dance Festival , Women in View , Dancing on the Edge, and the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival .

Ireni Stamou founded her own company Metaspora Danse in which she was artistic director and choreographer from 1995 till 2005. In Canada Ireni was recognized for her fusion hybrid choreographic style, and, Metaspora was funded and promoted for original work and public success both nationally and internationally. The company was funded by Multiculturalism Canada, The Montreal Arts Council , The Canada Council of the Arts and The Quebec Council of Arts and Letters. Metaspora created numerous youth initiative projects working with children and adolescents with her choreography Mosaic for Millennium . As artistic director Ireni created artistic collaborations with Canada's finest dancers, lighting designer's, costume designer's and composer's. The company created six full productions and was presented by Montréal's Tangente Danse Actuelle, La Agora de la danse, Danse Cite , The Montreal Intercultural Institute , and the Usine C .

Ireni taught and choreographed for the Montreal Modern Dance School (LADMI) 1996,1997 and 2000. The Quebec School of dance in 2002, and the troupe Echine D0 . Commissioned by the Festival du Monde Arabe in Montreal , in 2004 Ireni was invited to choreograph for the Canadian National Ballet School of Contemporary Dance a full-length choreography Razzias, where she also assumed artistic direction and production. She was introduced to Lebanese choreographer Alissar Caracalla of the prestigious dance company Caracalla of Beirut. Ireni taught a workshop for the troupe's dancers. The two choreographer s jointed their work for the piece Razzias. Alissar Caracalla School of dance performed with the Canadian National Ballet School of Contemporary Dance at the Place des Arts theatre in Montreal.

Ireni´s work expanded to film and television; she choreographed for the television documentary A Cine Qua Non Film Production on the composer's life Ravel . She also appeared acting in the film Invention d´amour that premiered at the Montreal International Film Festival in 1999

Ireni Stamou discovered Costa Rica with an invitation to pursue her research at Estudio Los Almendros , in 2000. Return invitations resulted in the choreographies Odyssia , 3 Etudes , N.O.W. (Necessary, open ,wonder), and Abstract of Desire . Ireni performed at the World dance Alliance in San Jose. Ireni collaborated and performed¨ in the video creation ¨ The Spirit of Athena¨ directed by Diane Carriere and filmed in location in the southern Nicoya Peninsula.

Falling in love with Costa Rica, Ireni created the project Flores de Pochote a living eco dance and poetry project; an ongoing project consisting of 20 min. solos and duets.

Flores de Pochote includes ¨Caminito del indio¨ a duet danced with National dancer Daniel Marenko, at La casa de Cultura de Los tres Mundos en Granada, Nicaragua and the solo ¨MIA ZOI¨ (signifying one life in Greek) in April 2007. With the solo MIA ZOI interpreted by Daniel Marenko, Ireni was selected as one of the national winner s of the Festival de Coreografos of Costa Rica (December 2007). Ireni performed her solo Lluvia at the International Dance Festival Mudanzes 4 in San Jose ,as well was offered to teach a somatic dance workshop at the Universidad National de Costa Rica .

Other Costa Rica experiences includes Ireni's performance at the first Montezuma International Film Festival in November 2007. Ireni also taught at the Universidad National de Costa Rica (Theater department with the actrice Ana Clara Carranza ), and performed at the event Puertas Abiertas / Compania Nacional de Teatro in San Jose.

Ireni was selected to participate in La guerre des Saintes a film directed by Giordano Gederlini , a Costa Rican/France co production, where Ireni Stamou was one of the actrices along with Carmen Maura .

Ireni is a Certified Yoga teacher and is founder of the ECO BODY LIVING workshops and retreats in Costa Rica,bringing the yoga practice and dance directly in nature. She offered Bodywork at Montezuma Yoga retreats, and is guest teacher of her own yoga dance fusion style at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort, and at Rio Shanti, Monteverdi. In 2010 Ireni bridges her talents as dancer and choreographer, yoga teacher and bodyworker between Costa Rica and Canada.
